Abstract

The researchers investigated the influence of counselling expectations of students on their behaviours toward seeking psychological help in Open and Distance Learning in Nigeria. The research design used for this study was descriptive survey. Four research questions and four hypotheses were formulated. Six hundred (600) students from Lagos study, Port Harcourt Centre, Enugu Centre, Makurdi Centre and Maiduguri Centres of the National University of Nigeria were stratified randomly selected for the study. The survey questionnaire contains 52 items which measures expected counsellor's expertise (9 items) students' personal commitments (22items) and facilitative conditions for counselling (21 items) Abbreviated version, and the Expectations about Counselling-Brief Form was used. Counsellor's expertise factor was the most significant factor in students' counselling expectations. When the hypotheses were tested, there were significant differences between personal commitment factor and counsellor's expertise (P<.028); facilitative condition factor and counsellor's expertise (P<.035); facilitative condition factor and personal commitment factor (P<.000). Counsellor's expertise factor though, was the most significant factor in students' counselling expectation when seeking psychological help in ODL system, other two factors are also germane and relevance. In conclusion therefore the counsellor's expertise plays a pivotal role in the clients' counselling expectations in seeking psychological helping behaviour
