Abstract

This study discusses the development of a web-based educational resource and tool for supporting teaching and learning of Nigerian indigenous languages. We identified and analysed the fundamental concepts in four (4) selected application domains, namely: (i) numeration and arithmetic, (ii) dictionary, (iii) human body parts, and (iv) machine translation. We then designed and implemented digital resources based on three (3) indigenous languages in Nigerian, namely: Yorùbá, Hausa, and Igbo. The system design was done using formal methods and Unified modelling language (UML) tools. Our system was implemented using the Python programming language and the necessary supporting tools. These tools were for deploying the digital resources in the context of a collaborative teaching and learning environment. The formal and informal evaluation of the system suggests it meets its functional and non-functional requirements. The system demonstrated capability to engaging learners, motivating them to learn more about indigenous concepts in their immediate environment. Our long-term aim is to develop robust, scalable and flexible digital resources with integrated tutoring systems for computer - supported teaching and learning of indigenous concepts in a multilingual, multicultural environment.
