Abstract

The study examined teachers’ digital competence and utilization of e-learning platforms in private secondary schools in Ado Local Government Area of Ekiti State. Three objectives, three research questions and three null hypotheses guided the study. The study was carried out in Ado Local Government Area of Ekiti State. The study employed a correlational survey research design. The population of the study comprised 5432 teachers in the 134 private secondary schools in Ado-Ekiti Local Government Area. Purposive sampling technique was used to select three hundred (300) teachers from 30 secondary schools in the study area. The instrument used for data collection was titled “Teachers’ Digital Competence and Utilization of E-learning Platforms”. The instrument was structured in a five-point Likert rating scale of agreement. The instrument was validated by experts while its reliability coefficient was established using Cronbach Alpha method. The reliability coefficients obtained were 0.79, 0.78, 0.81, 0.80, for the four clusters of questionnaires. Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation Coefficient statistics was used for data analysis, while significance of correlation coefficient was tested at 0.05 level using z-transformation formula of correlation coefficient. The study found that there is positive strong correlation between the investigated independent variables (teachers’ competence in information literacy, teachers’ communication competence, and teachers’ competence in digital content creation) and the dependent variable (utilization of e-learning platforms in private secondary schools). The test of correlation significance showed that the relationship between independent variables and the dependent variable were significant. The study recommended among others that school proprietors/proprietress should provide intensive trainings for their teachers on information and data literacy. This will not only add to their digital skill competence but also enhance their pedagogical skills by improving teachers’ literacy in information search, organization, and storage.
